The northwest corner of E. Randall Street and Battery Avenue is occupied by the Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church, first organized in 1885 as a German-language Evangelical Church. The first building on the site was a simple, one-story, gable-roofed brick church, designed by the pastor that was three bays wide and seven bays deep. The stained glass windows lighting the front and sides of the nave had pointed arches, but there was almost no other trim.
The Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church began in a small chapel at the corner of Randall and Battery Streets, also facing Riverside Park, in 1885. The church continued to hold services in German until 1936.
