It was founded in 1510, this foundation being confirmed in 1515 by the Countess of Niebla, Elvira de Guzmán. In 1620, when Sister Leonor de Vallejo was superior, the church was completed with the construction of the main chapel.

The Lisbon earthquake of 1755 did not affect the church, although it caused extensive damage to the residential area. The restoration works were financed thanks to a gift from King Ferdinand VI and the patronage of Irish patrons, Thomas Wading and Mary Atley, who They were named patrons of the convent.

The church was destroyed on July 20, 1936, when the convent was looted and burned in the anticlerical events that followed the start of the Civil War. Among other pieces, the 18th century altarpiece and the primitive image of Our Mother of Consolation were destroyed. The community was temporarily transferred to the Convent of San Leandro in Seville and the church remained in ruins until 1952. It was then that, after selling part of the convent land to the City Council, the restoration works began, which lasted until August 27, 1955.

In the basement of the convent the basement of the Onuba Aestuaria Roman lighthouse was found.
