In 1971, Marie Selby, whose husband was a partner in the Selby Oil and Gas Company, bequeathed her house and bay front property to the community of Sarasota for the purpose of creating a botanical garden. The garden opened to the public in 1975 and consists of 15 acres of different habitats and a variety of tropical and subtropical plants from around the world. Their specialty is air plants such orchids and bromeliads which grow on other plants. And there’s a great view of downtown Sarasota from across the bay.
