Settled on the remains of an Arab mosque (and inside a citadel, next to the now-defunct Huelva Castle), it is a Mudejar-style building that is considered the oldest church in the city. Located on the hill of the same name, the whiteness of its external coating is characteristic of Huelva buildings. On the contrary, its pink bell tower, which stands out against the sky from the square also bearing the same name, is one of the most typical images of the city.

It has resisted different incidents such as the collapse of its bell tower and the detachment of one of the bells on the dome after a storm on October 26, 1722 or the Lisbon earthquake of 1755, after which it was seriously damaged and had to be partially reconstructed. In 1758 a new landslide in the main front end caused serious damage again.

At the beginning of the 21st century, a restoration was carried out that focused on cleaning and reinforcing the vaults and eliminating added elements on the southeast and northwest façades.
