Residents of West Springfield are often called terriers because the town mascot is a terrier, specifically the West Highland White Terrier usually referred to as a Westie. In 2010 a program to place various theme painted Westies around town was sponsored by town businesses and painted by local artist.

The terrier in front of the Mittineague School was sponsored by Balise Motor Sales Corporation and painted by Jane Barrientos. She gave it the name Alpha Dog Puppy Love.
Breed: West Highland White Terrier
