In 1906, the Isthmian Canal Commission, a U.S. government bureaucracy responsible for building the Panama Canal, ordered 100 of these 2-6-0 moguls from ALCO’s Cooke Works in Paterson, NJ. Numbered 201-300, these coal burners were all similar in appearance and all sported sloping tenders, ostensibly because they were often run in reverse. These locomotives were the workhorses of the canal project hauling personnel and equipment around and moving millions of tons of dirt out of the massive Culebra cut.

After the Panama Canal was completed in 1914, most of these locomotives were sold off to other railroads or scrap dealers. #278 wound up with the Dardanelle & Russellville Railroad and was renumbered 10. The D&R is a short line (very short: less than 5 miles of track) that operates between Russellville and North Dardanelle in Arkansas supporting a few local businesses along the Arkansas River.

The deteriorating locomotive now sits in Shreveport’s Ford Park where it can watch the disc golfers pass by.
