The pound sits in an isolated, wooded area on the north side of Haydenville Road just outside Whately Center. It consists of a 40-foot square, dry-laid stone wall. The existing structure is a 1940 reconstruction on the original site of the pound which had deteriorated, fallen apart and become overgrown with trees.
The town voted at first town meeting on May 6, 1771 to build a 40' square stone wall enclosure with sturdy gate to keep stray animals for at a shilling per day. A committee chose the location just outside of the Center. Animals were identified to families by ear marks registered with the town clerk and recorded on town records.
