GLASTONBURY, CONNECTICUT
SERGEANT, UNITED STATES AIR FORCE
3RD SPECIAL OPERATIONS SQUADRON
PRESENTED
CONGRESSIONAL MEDAL OF HONOR
BY
PRESIDENT RICHARD M. NIXON
MAY 14, 1970
FOR CONSPICUOUS GALLANTRY ON THE NIGHT OF
FEBRUARY 24, 1969, LONG BINH ARMY POST,
REPUBLIC OF VIETNAM
The associated plaque is inscribed:
On the night of 24 February 1989, while providing fire support for a beleaguered U.S. Army at Long Binh, South Vietnam, A/1c Levitow’s AC47 gunship, ‘Spooky 71’, was struck by a hostile mortar round, which ripped a two-foot hole through one wing and sprayed the cargo compartment with shrapnel. Though bleeding from 47 shrapnel wounds, A/1c Levitow was crawling to the aid of two wounded companions when he spotted an armed magnesium flare rolling on the floor of the wildly pitching aircraft. Recognizing the imminent danger to the aircraft and crew, and ignoring the pain and shock of his own multiple wounds, A/1c Levitow threw himself bodily on the smoking 27-pound flare, dragged it to the rear of the aircraft and hurled it through the open cargo door. At that instant the flare separated and ignited clear of the aircraft. By his heroic action, A/1c Levitow was credited with saving the aircraft and its entire crew from certain destruction. He was awarded the Medal of Honor by the President of the United States on May 14, 1970.
