The previous pub was demolished and this building erected in 1892. The name of the pub, The Hope and Anchor, was originally used by a pub on Horsefair, nearer the centre of Pontefract.

This location is close to the ruins of Pontefract Castle that was demolished in 1649 after the English Civil War.

The date stone is on the wall level with the top of the ground floor windows. The stone is painted green with black lettering.
