Moe Howard was born Moses Harry Horwitz in Brooklyn, NY to parents of Lithuanian Jewish ancestry. Like many stars of early cinema and television, Moe Howard got his start performing on the vaudeville circuit and Mississippi River showboats. Early on, Moe and his brother Shemp teamed up with Ted Healy and, later, a vaudeville violinist named Larry Fine and went by the name ‘Ted Healy and His Racketeers’ which later became ‘Ted Healy and His Stooges.’

After several personnel changes, contract disputes and other disagreements, Moe Howard, Larry Fine and Moe’s other brother Curly, departed from Ted Healy and signed with Columbia Pictures in 1934 as ‘The Three Stooges.’ They would remain with Columbia for almost 25 years making 190 comedy shorts which we’ve all come to know and love. In the late 1940s, Curly, who had suffered a series of strokes, was replaced by his brother Shemp.

After their stint with Columbia, the ‘Three Stooges’ found a new audience when Colombia sold their shorts to television under the auspices of ‘Screen Gems.’ This led to several appearances in feature-length films including ‘Have Rocket, Will Travel’ and ‘The Three Stooges in Orbit.’ They also appeared on numerous television variety shows. Their timeless slapstick comedy can still be seen on TV to this day (meTV).

Unlike his on-screen persona, Moe Howard was often protective of the other stooges, keeping them on the straight and narrow and helping them make wise investments with their earnings. Also, unlike his ‘stooge’ alter ego, Howard was a bit of a homebody who enjoyed gardening, cooking and ceramics.

Moe Howard died of lung cancer in 1975. He is interred in one of the outdoor mausoleums at Hillside Memorial Park in Culver City next to Helen Schonberger, his wife of almost 50 years.
