The Mississippi River originates in the state of Minnesota and flows south, touching nine other U.S. states before emptying into the Gulf of Mexico in the state of Louisiana. In 2022, the U.S. Postal Service issued a set of ten stamps with the theme, ‘The Mighty Mississippi.’ Each of the ten stamps shows a view of the Mississippi River from each of the ten states it touches.
Representing the state of Louisiana is a view of the city of New Orleans from underneath the spans of the Crescent City Connection, the last bridge to cross the Mississippi River before the Gulf of Mexico. The original span was completed in 1958 and, at that time, was the longest cantilever truss bridge in the world. A second span was added in 1988. The bridges connect the downtown area of New Orleans with communities on the west bank of the Mississippi River, though those communities lie directly east of the bridges.
A contest was held after the completion of the second span to name the new bridge. The ‘Crescent City Connection’ won out over other entries including ‘The Pelican Pride,’ the ‘Creole Crossing’ and the ‘Jazz Gate Bridge.’ The view on the stamp is from under the bridges on the west bank. You can get to this point via the Mississippi River Trail, a paved bicycle and pedestrian trail that runs for miles on both sides of the river.
