During the second French Antarctic Expedition of 1908 - 1911, Jean-Baptiste Charcot and his crew spent the southern winter of 1909 on Petermann Island at Port Circumcision, a sheltered harbour. They build huts on the island that were powered by the electricity from the ship, the “Pourquoi Pas ? IV". They strung thick steel wires at the entrance of the bay to prevent Icebergs from entering. Several of the expedition members, Charcot included suffered from Scurvy.
At some point during the winter, they inscribed the initial of the boat “P P” above a tide mark, on rocks right where the boat spent the southern winter.
