Si alguien pregunta en Huelva dónde está el monumento a la provincia seguro que son pocos los que lo conocen. Pero si hablamos del monumento del burro, todos indicarán que es el de la avenida de Andalucía, en la glorieta de la avenida de Galaroza. Ocurre que ahora la vegetación que le rodea creció tanto que muchas de las figuras del mismo acabaron envueltas en una maraña verde, que no deja ver ni al burro ni a nada. Eso es lo que ocurre con la visión de conjunto tanto desde la avenida de Galaroza como desde la de Rubén Darío, donde la vegetación es un muro que no deja ver nada. Al igual que la parte trasera del mismo. De frente, pues se pueden ver las dos palmeras que bien creciditas están en la misma estructura del monumento ocultando gran parte del mismo. Por el tamaño de las mismas se entiende que no es una cuestión de hace un par de años, sino que viene de lejos, de bastante lejos. De los siguientes años respecto a cuando se levantó para los fastos de 1992. Entonces se podía ver bien su alegoría provincial, con una fuente a modo de mar a la que llega el agua de dos surcos, que emulan los ríos Odiel y Tinto. En la zona ajardinada se plantaron algunos arbustos y especies características de nuestros campos y Sierra. Claro, lo que nadie pensó es que los monumentos no crecen -como ya se dijo hace algunos años- y, por el contrario, este jardín, al que nunca le faltó el agua, pues se convirtió en un vergel con arbustos convertidos en arboles. Los madroños tienen ahora un tronco de arranque de cerca de un metro, con brazos de unos 30 centímetros. A lo que hay que sumar palmeras, pitas y otras especies.
Porque aquí parece que nadie se dio cuenta de que los monumentos no van a ser más grandes con los años. Para mantener las proporciones de dimensiones de la jardinería con respecto al monumento, hace falta una buena poda y no estaría mal que algunas especies fuesen trasplantadas a otros jardines de la ciudad, dado su volumen. De entrada lo que urge es una inmediata poda y, posteriormente, un estudio de adecentamiento del mismo. Es una pena que de un monumento de estas características no se pueda disfrutar. Además, no es fácil su visión al estar en una rotonda donde la circulación es de automóviles y deja para el peatón solo unos accesos con escasas perspectivas.
Es de las actuaciones con ocasión del V Centenario del Descubrimiento de América y ahora que se vuelve a conmemorar este acontecimiento de encuentro en el 525 aniversario, es una ocasión para al menos coger las tijeras de podar y darle un repaso a toda la jardinería. Es una cuestión que no necesita presupuesto, solo que alguien se dé una vuelta por aquí.
Cuestión distinta es el hecho de que el monumento debió tener una mayor altura a la hora de su instalación, aspecto este asumido por su propio autor, Pepe Noja. Como él mismo resaltó, el entorno actual es muy distinto a lo que había en su momento: "era todo esto un descampado, solo con un edificio cercano y ahora son muchas las construcciones que hay a su alrededor". Estas son declaraciones a Huelva Información del 20 de octubre de 2002, cuando al justificar la vegetación en el marco del proyecto inicial, señaló que "se le plantó una vegetación con la obligatoriedad de cortarla periódicamente, como se hace en todas las plazas". Lamentaba entonces que "eso no ha ocurrido". Habían pasado diez años desde la inauguración y no se tuvo en cuenta una cuestión tan sencilla como es la poda. Ahora, 15 años después de aquellas declaraciones, la situación es mucho peor, porque lo que hay es una selva que oculta al monumento. Esa crecida vegetación a la que aludía y lamentaba Pepe Noja, le ha hecho perder parte de su visión como es la cascada en la parte trasera, "que tiene su encanto, porque es el agua de la Sierra", decía. A la vez que intuía lo que ahora ha ocurrido, al señalar que ya le estaba pasando igual que a la cascada "al caballo y la ventana".
La propuesta de elevación del monumento que técnicamente sería posible, según el escultor, se rechazó en 2002 porque era económicamente muy elevada. Noja apuntó en su momento dos opciones para realzar el monumento, como la de elevar el pedestal un metro y medio más, lo que en su opinión no dañaría la obra. Mientras apuntaba como opción más barata la de cortar la plantación que crecía sin control alguno. El Ayuntamiento estudió la posibilidad de levantar el monumento, pero lo descarto al estimarse entonces un presupuesto de unos 60.000 euros.
Así que habrá que insistir en la poda, que es lo más fácil para seguir disfrutando de tan especial monumento a la provincia de Huelva en un año tan emblemático como este del 525 Aniversario.

Because here it seems that nobody realized that the monuments are not going to get bigger with the years. To maintain the proportions of dimensions of the gardening with respect to the monument, a good pruning is necessary and it would not be a bad thing if some species were transplanted to other gardens in the city, given their volume. From the outset, what is urgent is an immediate pruning and, later, a study of cleaning it up. It is a pity that a monument of these characteristics cannot be enjoyed. In addition, it is not easy to see it when you are in a roundabout where the circulation is by cars and leaves only a few accesses for pedestrians with few perspectives.
It is one of the performances on the occasion of the V Centennial of the Discovery of America and now that this meeting event is being commemorated again on the 525th anniversary, it is an opportunity to at least take up the pruning shears and give a review of all gardening. It's a question that doesn't need a budget, just for someone to come around here.
A different matter is the fact that the monument must have been taller when it was installed, an aspect assumed by its own author, Pepe Noja. As he himself highlighted, the current environment is very different from what it was at the time: "it was all a wasteland, with only one nearby building and now there are many buildings around it." These are declarations to Huelva Information from October 20, 2002, when when justifying the vegetation in the framework of the initial project, he pointed out that "vegetation was planted with the obligation to cut it periodically, as is done in all squares." He regretted then that "that has not happened." Ten years had passed since the inauguration and an issue as simple as pruning was not taken into account. Now, 15 years after those declarations, the situation is much worse, because what there is is a jungle that hides the monument. That overgrown vegetation that Pepe Noja alluded to and lamented, has made him lose part of his vision, such as the waterfall at the back, "which has its charm, because it is the water of the Sierra," he said. At the same time that he intuited what has now happened, when he pointed out that the same thing as the waterfall was already happening to "the horse and the window".
The proposal to raise the monument, which would be technically possible, according to the sculptor, was rejected in 2002 because it was financially too high. Noja pointed out at the time two options to enhance the monument, such as raising the pedestal one and a half meters more, which in his opinion would not damage the work. While pointing out as the cheapest option to cut down the plantation that was growing without any control. The City Council studied the possibility of raising the monument, but ruled it out when a budget of about 60,000 euros was estimated at the time.
So it will be necessary to insist on pruning, which is the easiest way to continue enjoying such a special monument to the province of Huelva in a year as emblematic as this 525th Anniversary.
