[EN] The construction of the church of San Pedro began in the year 1100, being contemporary with the basilica of San Vicente. It is made in the Romanesque style, being one of the best examples of this style in Ávila.

Its structure has a Latin cross plan, with three naves covered with ogive vaults and a triple apse. Outside, the square tower stands out, built at the same time. The construction was initiated by the apses, like all the temples of its time, its works lasted throughout the century and reached the thirteenth century.

On the main façade, its large Cistercian rose window stands out, a typical element of the period of transition between the Romanesque and the Gothic, which here appears to be made up of small radial columns that start from a concentric circle, and in whose interior spaces the stained glass windows are distributed, It was reformed in 1967.

Below the rose window is the doorway, wide and simple, made up of smooth archivolts, except for the outer one, which is protected and separated from the rose window by a simple tile roof.

The transept and the transept present elements from the Gothic period such as the pointed barrel arches or the simple ribbed vaults. The dome is from the 15th century and seeks inspiration from that of the Basilica of San Vicente.

Its long construction determined that the projected tribunes were not raised, that the tower was attached to the northern apse and that in the organization of the western gable there was a doorway without historiated decoration topped by a rose window with Cistercian aesthetics.

Inside, the tables that are distributed along the walls of the naves, the baroque altarpiece of the main chapel, its bars, the valuable altarpieces in its chapels, images and paintings, among which an Annunciation from the XV, from the master of Riofrío, or a table with a scene of the Virgin, by Juan de Borgoña.

Together with the Cathedral and the Basilica of San Vicente, it is one of the largest temples in the city and in the entire province.

It has one of the most interesting Romanesque portals in Avila, its proportions are monumental, which is why it appears reinforced with four large buttresses. Its ornamentation complies with the guidelines of the Cistercian Order that were reflected in the last construction stage of the building.
