In 1866 Bishop Claude M. Dubuis of Galveston sent a young French immigrant, Emil L. J. R. Fleury, to organize a congregation and build a church to serve Boerne and the outlying towns and army posts.

The first church which still stands next to this one was completed in 1867. This pictured church was completed in 1923. It is a Spanish Baroque/Mission Revival style two-story rough cut limestone church with two corner bell towers raising three-stories.
