The full title of this painting is usually given as ‘Virgin and Child in a Landscape.’ The artist, Giovanni Battista Cima, is sometimes called Cima da Conegliano after the city of Conegliano, the artist’s home town north of Venice in the foothills of the Italian Alps. He was active during the late fifteenth century and the early sixteenth century, the heart of the Venetian ‘Golden Age.’

Many of his paintings depict scenes from the Conegliano area in the background and this painting is no exception, although most of the background has been cropped off on the stamp. As with several of his more popular paintings, Cima created copies of ‘Virgin and Child in a Landscape’ all of which differ slightly. The stamp identifies this version, in the North Carolina Museum of Art, as its subject.
