“Un hombre no es de donde nace, sino de donde elige morir”. Orson Welles, a quien se atribuye esta frase, no eligió morir en Ronda, pero consiguió que sus restos se quedasen para siempre en la ciudad del tajo. El 8 de mayo de 1987, su hija Beatrice colocó las cenizas del director, enamorado de la ciudad desde casi siempre, en un pozo del jardín de una finca de Antonio Ordóñez, el famoso torero. Desde hace unos años esa finca, que hoy poseen Fran y Cayetano Rivera, se alquila como casa rural.
Orson Welles murió el 10 de octubre de 1985 en Hollywood, el lugar donde se hizo un nombre legendario, pero antes de morir había dejado claro que quería que le llevasen a Ronda. Con año y medio de retraso, la familia cumplió su deseo.
La crónica de El País del 8 de mayo de 1987 recogía las frases con las que el sacerdote Gonzalo Huesa ofició el entierro: “Si juntamos su amor a su profesión y a sus amigos, hay que decir que en este hombre está Dios”. Después, su hija y Antonio Ordóñez sacaron un cofre de madera de una bolsa azul e metieron las cenizas de Orson Welles donde siguen hoy: un pozo con la inscripción “Ronda, al maestro de maestros”.
Welles, fascinado por las tradiciones españolas
La familia Ordóñez tenía con Welles una profunda amistad, labrada a partir de la afición del cineasta por el toreo. El director de Ciudadano Kane y Sed de Mal, entre otras obras maestras, era un habitual de la casa, igual que lo fue durante años otro apasionado de la España romantizada como Ernest Hemingway.
Welles aprovechaba sus visitas al torero para filmar algunas de sus faenas. Incluso llegó a publicarse que Welles rodaría una película con Ordóñez de protagonista masculino y Elizabeth Taylor, como estrella femenina, aunque nunca más se supo.
Que al director le fascinaba España también se sabe. Aunque no estuvo durante la Guerra Civil, la representó en algunos de sus programas radiofónicos. También se cuenta que acabó a sillazos con Hemingway a cuento de la locución de Tierra de España, el proyecto documental para explicar la guerra al público americano puesto en marcha por el escritor, el documentalista Joris Ivens y otro novelista comprometido, John Dos Passos.
Rodó Campanadas a medianoche en Cardona (Barcelona) y Colmenar Viejo (Madrid), y Mr. Arkadin en Valladolid, Madrid y Segovia. Años más tarde aprovechó el rodaje de su adaptación de Don Quijote para filmar una serie documental para la RAI italiana, Nella terra di Don Chisciotte (En la tierra de Don Quijote) y darse la gran vida recorriendo los lugares, tabernas y fiestas que tanto le fascinaban: Ronda, la Semana Santa, los Sanfermines, las bodegas de Jerez…. Seis de los nueve capítulos de la serie están dedicados a Andalucía.
Sin embargo, nunca pudo completar la adaptación de Don Quijote, el gran proyecto con el que aspiraba a retratar no sólo al Ingenioso Hidalgo, sino también la idiosincrasia española.
La finca en la que reposan las cenizas de Orson Welles, llamada El Recreo de San Cayetano, está en plena A-357, la carretera que lleva a Ronda desde Campillos. Son diez hectáreas con olivar, árboles frutales, huerto y una piscina, además de una casa de cinco habitaciones que hoy se pueden alquilar en algunas plataformas de reservas hoteleras, a 650 euros por noche.
Apenas a seis kilómetros está Ronda, la ciudad del tajo imponente y de una singular plaza de toros con más de doscientos años de antigüedad. El tajo saja la ciudad y la divide en dos, la vieja y la nueva, unidas por el Puente Nuevo, que ya no lo es tanto: lleva doscientos años allí.
Ronda es íbera, romana, musulmana y cristiana, y también tierra de asaltacaminos, de ahí su Museo del Bandolero. La colegiata de Santa María la Mayor, el Palacio del Rey Moro, las murallas restauradas en los últimos años o los Baños Árabes son algunos de los lugares de interés en el núcleo. Muy cerca, también merece la pena visitar los restos de Acinipo, donde sigue en pie uno de los teatros romanos mejor conservados de España.

Welles, fascinated by Spanish traditions
The Ordóñez family had a deep friendship with Welles, forged from the filmmaker's love of bullfighting. The director of Ciudadano Kane and Sed de Mal, among other masterpieces, was a regular at the house, just like Ernest Hemingway, another fan of romanticized Spain, was for years.
Welles took advantage of his visits to the bullfighter to film some of his tasks. It was even published that Welles would shoot a film with Ordóñez as the male lead and Elizabeth Taylor as the female star, although it was never known again.
That the director was fascinated by Spain is also known. Although he was not there during the Civil War, he represented it in some of its radio programs. It is also said that he ended up with Hemingway with chairs due to the locution of Tierra de España, the documentary project to explain the war to the American public launched by the writer, the documentary filmmaker Joris Ivens and another committed novelist, John Dos Passos.
He shot Campanadas a midnight in Cardona (Barcelona) and Colmenar Viejo (Madrid), and Mr. Arkadin in Valladolid, Madrid and Segovia. There are ten hectares with olive groves, fruit trees, an orchard and a swimming pool, as well as a five-bedroom house that can now be rented on some hotel reservation platforms for 650 euros per night.
Just six kilometers away is Ronda, the city of the imposing pit and a unique bullring that is more than two hundred years old. The cut cuts through the city and divides it in two, the old and the new, linked by the New Bridge, which is not so old anymore: it has been there for two hundred years.
Ronda is Iberian, Roman, Muslim and Christian, and also a land of highwaymen, hence its Bandit Museum. The collegiate church of Santa María la Mayor, the Palace of the Moorish King, the walls restored in recent years or the Arab Baths are some of the places of interest in the town. Nearby, it is also worth visiting the remains of Acinipo, where one of the best preserved Roman theaters in Spain still stands.
