I would wager that most folks who have visited the sites in and around Chattanooga have a photo or two of the city as seen from Lookout Mountain. But if you want a view of Chattanooga that includes Lookout Mountain, you can visit the National Cemetery located on a hill within the city limits. There’s a flagpole at the top of the hill and the view is to the west.
The cemetery was established in 1863, in the middle of the Civil War, and was first used to bury casualties from the Battles of Chattanooga and Chickamauga. The site was the same hill used by Major General Ulysses S. Grant during the Battle of Lookout Mountain (November 24, 1863). In 1867, it was designated a National Cemetery.
The Chattanooga National Cemetery is open every day from dawn to dusk. It is located a little over a mile from the downtown area.
