[FR] Peu d'ouvrage ont en effet si bien surmonter les guerres, les progrès et le temps point alors écouter l'histoire de ce monument qui fut dévolue un des plus beaux rôles qui soit : permettre aux hommes d'aller et venir

Au préalable, regarder : 6 arches (5 et demi en fait car l'une a été tronqué lors de la percée de la route et de la construction du quai), 3 ogival de construction primitive sur la rive gauche, 3 en arc de cercle moins ancienne, rive droite. Longueur totale: 104 m ; en dos d'âne. Largeur, faible comme toujours au Moyen-Âge deux points entre 3,7 et 4 m. Remarquer sur chaque pilier les avant-becs, en pointe désormais arrondi, et les arrières Bègles, formant un refuge en rectangle.

Qui l'a construit ? Demandez-vous. Des moines point ou plutôt les bâtisseurs qui semblèrent point pour financer un tel ouvrage, l'abbaye de Terrasson vendit une partie de ses terres. Pour le concevoir, elle demande à l'aide de l'abbaye Saint-Martial de Limoges, dans laquelle elle dépendait alors. Pour le bâtir, elle trouva du grès dans la commune voisine de Cublac; et elle établit et renforça une dérivation de la Vézère, appeler le Brasset, qui se fait créer rive droite l'île de La Vergne, afin de limiter la hauteur des eaux alors impétueuse.
Penser à ce que représenta l'ouverture de ce somptueux passage en 1150 ! Hélas, des Anglais arrivèrent, moins charmant que ceux qui apportent aujourd'hui leur bonheur à notre ville. Les vaillants moines ne plus rien contre les ordres qui est désolèrent l'Aquitaine pendant les 14 et 15e siècle. Pourtant, si l'abbaye, église, château, bourg, et moulin sur détruit, le pont est un bon, sauf peut-être les premiers arches de la rive droite.
