The battle of Diên Biên Phu took place between 13th March and 7th May of 1954 around the small village of Diên Biên in the North-Western part of what was called at the time Indochina and was a French colony.
Around 14 000 French soldiers were besieged by 50 000 Vietminh soldiers.
On 7th of May, French troops surrendered. The Vietminh won and it was the last battle of the independence war and the beginning of the peace process.
The battle field of Diên Biên has a lot of memorials dedicated to the victory of Vietminh troops. This one was built by a former Legionnaire, Rolf Rodel, in 1994. It's now the property of the Frenc embassy in Vietnam.
