Cove Fort was constructed in 1867 at the request of Brigham Young to provide a haven half-way between Salt Lake City and the nearest other major city, Beaver. The fort was constructed of volcanic rock, and the fort entry was designed to be as nearly impenetrable as possible. The ten-foot-tall doors that form the gate are made with wood on the inside and outside, and the hollow space between could be quickly filled with sand, making them impervious to arrows and small-arms fire. Fortunately, they were never put to the test; this fort was never seriously threatened. One of the six hinges (left, center) is original; the other five are replicas.
Tours of the fort are available during business hours, at no fee. The guides are friendly and knowledgable!
