The plaque says, "This bridge is named for local heroine Michelle Newton Smith, an Emergency Medical Technician with the Delaware City Fire Co. Smith, who dedicated her life to helping others, was aiding an injured motorcyclist along U.S. 13 when she was struck by an oncoming car and critically injured.
Two days later, on Dec. 22, 2008, she succumbed to the injuries sustained in the accident. Smith was the embodiment of the best traditions of the Delaware fire and emergency medical service, putting herself in harm's way to help others. Her life of service will always be remembered and celebrated by the people of Delaware City and the Delaware City Fire Company."
