He was born on February 25, 1878 into a banking family, whose origin dates back to the first half of the 19th century. That was not, however, the path he was going to follow.

He first trained as a disciple of José Larrocha, in Granada, in whose workshop he met who would become one of his best friends, the also painter José María López Mezquita. With his great artistic culture and his clean style, he started doing Granada landscapes and traditional painting. It has been said that he did not stop advancing until his death. Later, in 1899, he went to Madrid, where he trained with the teacher Emilio Sala and developed his style between symbolism and modernism.

José María Rodríguez-Acosta nuanced his painting, with a restrictive palette, which in still lifes gained its maximum expressiveness. He also devoted himself to female nudes. In 1914 he returned to Granada, and began the construction of his carmen. After a few sabbatical years, in the 1920s, he resumed painting with female nudes as protagonists and still lifes.

Rodríguez-Acosta died in 1941, leaving behind him his work, partly preserved in numerous museums, along with the painting La noche (1941) that would remain unfinished due to his sudden death, and the building that served as his studio, now converted into Granada in the Fundación Museum that bears his name as a sign of distinction.
