He was a Doctor of Philosophy and Letters and graduated in Law. At the beginning of the 20th century, he unsuccessfully competed for university chairs in Valencia, Santiago de Compostela, Salamanca, Madrid, Barcelona, ??Granada, Seville and Oviedo. In December 1906 he joined the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters in Madrid as assistant professor of the Letters section. His service sheet certifies a "constant performance of the Paleography and Vulgar Latin chairs of the Central University" and the "eventual of the chairs of Spanish Language and Literature, Latin Language and Literature, and Comparative Philology of Latin and Spanish". He was professor, by opposition, of Spanish Language and Literature at the University of Seville (since December 15, 1910) and of Madrid from April 1, 1914. He coincided with Pedro Salinas, but they did not like each other, since Hurtado he followed the erudite historicist methodology of Positivism in his pedantic, documented and precise lessons, while Salinas tried above all to update and vitalize the classics, so that the latter judged him negatively on several occasions, considering that he had "less spirit than a brick". "1 Calling him behind his back "the beast of Hurtado, the author of that unfortunate manual" and "semi-person". literature and who portrayed it thus:

«As for Don Juan Hurtado, Juanito as we called him for fun, he was a fat, gangly, myopic, mediocre and clumsy Granada, who did not dominate the class and had to face the classic foolish jokes of the students»

He was of traditionalist and very Christian ideology and co-directed with his friend the Arabist Ángel González Palencia (1889-1949) Spanish Letters, Collection of Selected and Modern Works of Editorial Voluntad (Madrid, 1925-1927), 25 volumes by authors of the Century of Gold. With González Palencia, who wrote a heartfelt obituary after his death, he also produced a monumental History of Spanish Literature with a Menendezpelayuna orientation, precise and well documented, aimed at a university and educated public, which had six editions, mostly reprints, with very few changes. This work includes pagan and Christian periods, Hispano-Jewish and Hispano-Arabic literature, and divides the Castilian Middle Ages into three periods: the 12th and 13th centuries, the 14th century and the 15th century. Likewise, with Palencia, he translated the Historia de la literatura universal by Émile Faguet and Arqueles Vela, which included Hitler as one of its authors.
