On the corner of the Kapelhuis in Amersfoort, a famous Maria statue was placed and it was a famous pilgrimage site.

Hoewel het Kapelhuis in 1521 werd gebouwd, begint de geschiedenis van dit pand bijna 80 jaar eerder bij Het Mirakel van Amersfoort:
Op 24 december 1444 wilde de 16-jarige Geertje Arents uit Nijkerk haar intrek nemen in het st. Agnesklooster. Zij had een eenvoudig Mariabeeldje bij zich. Bij de Kamperbuitenpoort gekomen wierp ze dit, omdat zij zich er voor schaamde, in een wak in de stadsgracht.

Een zekere Margriete Albert Gysendochter kreeg op Kerstavond een droom, waarin haar werd opgedragen een beeldje uit de gracht bij de genoemde stadspoort te halen. De volgende ochtend, tijdens het water putten, vond zij het beeldje onder het ijs. Thuisgekomen stak zij er een kaars voor aan. Het viel haar op dat deze wel driemaal zo lang brandde als verwacht. Zij vertelde dit aan haar biechtvader, Jan van Schoonhoven, die het beeldje mee naar zijn huis nam. Omdat zich daar ‘opmerkelijke mirakelen’ voordeden plaatse hij het uiteindelijk in de Onze Lieve Vrouwekapel. Door verscheidene mirakelen veroorzaakte het beeldje een enorme toeloop van gelovigen, die genezing van hun ziekten verwachtten.

Het Kapelhuis dateert uit het voorjaar van 1521 en is het enige bewaard gebleven laatgotische huis in Amersfoort. In die tijd was het Kapelhuis de zetel van de Broederschap van Onze Lieve Vrouw. Deze Broederschap is in 1445 opgericht en was verantwoordelijk voor de organisatie van Amersfoort als Pelgrimsstad. Eigenlijk een soort VVV-kantoor avant la lettre voor de pelgrims. In de hoek van het pand was een nis en daar stond dan het fameuze Maria-beeldje. Hier kwamen talloze pelgrims op af. Het was echter een replica, want het echte beeldje werd in de Onze Lieve Vrouwe Kapel bewaard.

In verloop van tijd heeft het pand vele functies gehad. Het was een wijnhandel, een woonhuis en na 1950 een atelier van drie bekende Amersfoortse kunstenaressen. Sinds 2016 is het een kantoor voor enkele multimedia-medrijven.

Although the Kapelhuis was built in 1521, the history of this building starts almost 80 years earlier at Het Mirakel van Amersfoort:
On December 24, 1444, the 16-year-old Geertje Arents from Nijkerk wanted to move into the st. Agnes Monastery. She had a simple statue of the Virgin Mary with her. When she reached the Kamperbuitenpoort she threw it, because she was ashamed of it, into a hole in the city moat.

A certain Margriete Albert Gysen daughter had a dream on Christmas Eve, in which she was instructed to fetch a statue from the canal at the said city gate. The next morning, while drawing water, she found the statue under the ice. When she got home she lit a candle for it. She noticed that it burned three times as long as expected. She told this to her confessor, Jan van Schoonhoven, who took the statue to his house. Because 'remarkable miracles' occurred there, he eventually placed it in the Chapel of Our Lady. Through several miracles, the statue caused a huge flock of believers, who expected healing from their illnesses.

The Kapelhuis dates from the spring of 1521 and is the only preserved late Gothic house in Amersfoort. At that time, the Chapel House was the seat of the Brotherhood of Our Lady. This Brotherhood was founded in 1445 and was responsible for the organization of Amersfoort as a pilgrim city. Actually a kind of tourist office avant la lettre for pilgrims. In the corner of the building was a niche and there was the famous Maria statue. Countless pilgrims came here. However, it was a replica, because the real statue was kept in the Onze Lieve Vrouwe Chapel.

Over time, the building has had many functions. It was a wine shop, a house and after 1950 a studio of three well-known Amersfoort artists. Since 2016 it has been an office for several multimedia companies.
