The Canadian Northern Railway operated between 1895 and 1919, ostensibly as a second transcontinental line, following Canadian Pacific. The road started from Parry Sound to Toronto and north to Capreol (Sudbury). However, access to Great Lake ports was very limited in the south.

The road eventually expanded to Port Hope in 1911. The station was completed at that time. Passenger service began in October of that year.

The CNorR completed its transcontinental system in 1915, with over 10,000 miles of track. However, by 1919 the road was bankrupt. The newly-created Canadian National Railways absorbed the railroad, along with the neighbouring Midland Railway.

The station remained in use until 1925, when the new trackage northeast of here made the station redundant.

The building sat vacant until purchased by the provincial government. It was refurbished and has now been repurposed as offices for the Ontario Ministry of Transportation.
