Once a peaceful fishing village, Playa del Carmen has become a popular destination on the Riviera Maya. Lively bars, cool boutiques, local taquerias and luxury hotels rub shoulders here, all with a bit more authenticity than in Cancún, further north. During the day, hit the beach or take the ferry to Cozumel, and at night stroll down La Quinta (the town's main pedestrian street) to mingle with the locals and sip a delicious margarita. And if you want more, go scuba diving or visit the ruins of Coba Tower which dominates the surrounding jungle.
