In the Marienthal valley, I noticed several Danke letters on the side of the road and also on this hill.

I looked for what the people were thankfull for. When you google Dernau, you quickly get to pages showing the 2021 flooding which happened here (and in the rest of Europe as well). (visit link)

I assume that for all the support they have received, they are thankfull.
