Der eigentliche Gipfel liegt gut 140 Meter weiter westlich, aber da das Gipfelkreuz vom Tal aus besser einsehbar ist, wurde es hier plaziert. Auf dem Gipfel selbst steht einer Unterstand, der nach Nordosten offen ist, von da aus hat man einen schönen Blick.
Der Herzogstand seinen Namen 1535 von den Bayernherzögen Wilhelm IV. und Ludwig X. erhalten.
