A 50' high marble obelisk honor the citizens from Middletown who died in World War I. The obelisk has two bronze plaques at it's base. The plaque on the front of the monument has an image of a eagle with spread winds perched on palm fronds and the seal of the City of Middletown. It is inscribed:

1917 THE WORLD WAR 1918
IN GRATEFUL REMBERANCE OF
THE SOLDIERS AND SAILORS FROM
MIDDLETOWN
WHO DIED IN THE
SERVICE OF THEIR COUNTRY
ON THESE BATTLEFIELDS
OR ON THE HIGH SEAS
OR BY THE PESTILENCE
THAT WALKETH IN DARKNESS
OR THE DESTRUCTION
THAT WASTETH AT NOONDAY

LET IT ALSO BE AN INSPIRATION TO THE LIVING
TO BE LOYAL TO THE IDEALS OF OUR NATION
FOR WHICH THESE MEN DIED WHOSE NAMES
ARE HERE RECORDED AND TO
FUTURE GENERATIONS LET IT BE A REMINDER
OF THE SOLEMN TRUST COMMITTED TO THEM
