Sitka was one of many railroad water stop towns, from a time when steam locomotives could only travel twenty miles or so before requiring a refill. Better steam engines and diesel locomotives meant that the water tank was no longer needed, but the train still stopped for grain at the elevator. And the Sitka Social Club was the hub of activity in the town. Constructed long enough ago that there are still hitching rings out front, the Club was active through the 1980s. But the railroad ceased operation - the rails were pulled for recycling years ago - and the grain is now moved by truck and Sitka faded away. About all that remains is the elevator, a new metal building, and this area where trucks still park for the night. The Sitka Social Club is still standing, but is fast falling into ruin.
