It is now on the Hallam Railway Line that connects Leeds to Sheffield via Castleford and the bridge is between Castleford and Normanton railway stations.
Historically the line was the final link in a three railway line junction that served much of the country. In Victorian times Normanton Station was one of the most important stations in northern England and boasted the world's longest railway station platform (400m long).
The bridge is quite narrow and the road is for two lane traffic it narrows to a single lane under the bridge. The top of the arch is narrower still meaning that high sided vehicles have to pass in the middle of the road and there is a restriction on lorries of a weight of 7.5 tons.
