The statue, cast in bronze, stands atop a brick plinth with a plaque on the front that reads:

John Ray 1627 - 1705
Naturalist
Sculptor - Faith Winter FRBS

The statue is slightly larger than life-size and shows John Ray stood upright wearing clothing that would be common place on a 17th century scholar. He is clean shaven and has hair down to the base of his neck.

His right hand supports a large book that rests on his right hip and his left hand supports a walking stick.
