Mother’s Day became a national holiday in 1914 via a proclamation signed by President Woodrow Wilson. Twenty years later, in 1934, this postage stamp was issued to celebrate Mother’s Day. Its design was based on the iconic painting known as ‘Whistler’s Mother’ by American-born artist James A McNeill Whistler.

The painting was first displayed in London where it received mixed reviews. Its official title, ‘Arrangement in Grey and Black no.1,’ was disturbing to Victorian sensibilities, but others praised the painting’s composition and use of color. Today, ‘Whistler’s Mother’ is one of the most recognizable paintings by an American artist. As such, many Americans are surprised to learn that it does not hang in an American art gallery but rather in the Musée d’Orsay in Paris.
