WLNE-TV (channel 6) is an ABC affiliate television station in Providence, Rhode Island. Its studio at 10 Orms Street serves the greater Rhode Island region including cities of New Bedford, Fall River, and Attleboro in Massachusetts.
The station began broadcasting on January 1, 1963, as WTEV from studios on 430 County Street in New Bedford, Massachusetts, as an ABC affiliate, its transmitter located in Little Compton, Rhode Island, with the antenna mounted on a 500-foot (150 m) tower; a few years later, WTEV moved to a 950-foot (290 m) tower in Tiverton, Rhode Island. Location of the tower and potential interference with other stations' signals caused major issues before the arrival of cable in in the early 1970s.
WTEV became a CBS affiliate on June 27, 1977, when WPRI was bought by Knight Ridder Television. The station was sold again in 1979 and the call letters changed to WLNE on September 8, 1980, and used a promotional acronym for "We Love New England".
CBS announced in March 1995 that it would purchase WPRI-TV and move its programming there...At midnight on September 10, 1995, WPRI and WLNE reversed the 1977 swap; WLNE then began calling itself ABC6.
