A historical marker at this location describes a skirmish, which occurred in May 1863, between Osage Indians and a troop of Confederate officers. The Osage had been harassed by both sides, and had ordered all non-Osage off their territory. An Osage hunting party encountered a troop of about twenty Confederate officers who were on their way west to stir up rebellion in New Mexico and Colorado. A shot was fired, dropping one Osage, and the Osage pursued the Confederates for fifteen miles to a location a few miles east of this location, at Drum Creek, and killed all but two - thus foiling the Confederate plot to sow seeds of insurrection in the west.
