Townhead Silk Mill, Eyam. This used to be a silk weaving mill but is now residential units. The pigeon loft on the gable of the building held carrier pigeons which were used to send messages to the silk mills in Macclesfield.
The plaque reads -
TOWNHEAD
FACTORY
This factory was built in
1735 as a silk weaving mill.
Ralph Wain, who worked
here, discovered how to
produce a pattern on both
sides of silk materials.
At the apex of the wall is
a pigeon loft used by carrier
pigeons carrying
messages to the silk mills
in Macclesfield.
Wain, an illiterate semi-recluse, was persuaded to sell his valuable invention to the Macclesfield firm supplying his silk, who then promptly patented the idea and reaped the rewards. Now Wain is just a side note in history.
