The Church of San Pedro Mártir de Verona is located in the Plaza de la Constitución, next to the cemetery and the Mirador de la Plaza, in Genalguacil.
The primitive church was erected before 1534, which was burned and destroyed by the Moors in 1570. During the rebellion of the Moors, about five hundred soldiers were sent to Sierra Bermeja to depopulate it. The soldiers began to steal and take slaves, which provoked the anger of the Moors who came down to defend their women and children. The chief of the soldiers, Pedro Bermúdez, left some in the church in the care of women, children and the elderly. The Moors surrounded it, took out those who were locked up in it and burned it with the soldiers inside, without these being able to be helped.
The current factory underwent a major reconstruction during the last third of the s. XVIII. The style can be framed in the classicist and academic Baroque. The Mudejar style is present in the simple wooden frame of the central nave. Subsequently, restoration works have been carried out, the last and most important being those of last year.
In the foothills of the Sierra Bermeja, and sunk in the Genal valley, is Genalguacil, a small town that, according to this year's municipal register, has 519 residents. On weekends the population grows significantly, due to tourists seeking fresh air and beautiful panoramic views, such as those seen in the photograph, as well as the arrival of Genalguacileños who work on the coast. Although we do not know the date of construction of the Parish Church, comparative studies with other towns place it between the end of the 16th and 17th centuries. What does seem to be clear is that during the last third of the s. XVIII an important reconstruction of it was carried out.
The temple, with a basilica plan, has a wide central nave with a double proportion to the lateral ones. Its structure reflects the baroque style of the mountains, with a portico tower at the foot. Another signif icant element is the wooden frame, faithful testimony of the survival of the Mudejar carpentry techniques of the s. XVIII. The parish is dedicated to Saint Peter the Martyr of Verona, the first martyr of the Dominican order, whose feast is solemnly celebrated by the faithful on April 29. In addition, in the religious festival calendar, the festivity of the patron saint, the Virgin Mary in her dedication to Candelaria, which is celebrated on February 2, also occupies a prominent place; and Easter Sunday, one of the great days of the town, which is celebrated with the emotional custom known as #Huerto del Niño#.
