A plaque on the side of the building reads -
ROYAL OAK
INN

The original inn, built in
1587, was called
"The Heart of Oak"
as a reference to gallant
English seamen.
The inn was rebuilt in
1660 and renamed
"The Royal Oak"
as a mark of respect to
the restoration of the
monarchy.
It was altered extensively
in 1907.
