On May 17, 2004, Isamu Noguchi would have celebrated his 100th birthday. To commemorate the event, the U.S. Postal Service issued a set of five postage stamps featuring various works by the celebrated sculptor. These ranged from portrait busts to abstract sculptures to one of his iconic ‘Akari’ lamps.

This abstract sculpture, called ‘Figure,’ was originally carved from marble in 1945, but after that one broke apart, a series of eight bronze castings and two artist’s proofs were made between 1973 and 1988. The stamp shows the eighth in the series (cast in 1986) and which belongs to The Isamu Noguchi Foundation and Garden Museum in the Long Island City area of Queens, New York.

Isamu Noguchi’s work ranged from landscape design, monumental public sculpture to industrial design to architecture. He even designed the museum which houses this piece. The museum is open to the general public Wednesdays through Sundays.
