"If evolution works, why do mothers only have two hands?"
- Milton Berle
Born Mendel Berlinger in New York City in 1908, Berle began modelling at the age of five and performing as a child actor in several silent films as early as 1914. By 1920, he was on the Vaudeville circuit and around 1924, changed his name to Milton Berle. In the 1930s, Berle had become a successful standup comedian and radio personality.
Milton Berle is perhaps best known for his work in the early days of television. As host of the Texaco Star Theater (1948-53), he dominated the ratings. Of course, there wasn’t much in the way of competition but as the first big star of the medium, Berle became known as ‘Mr. Television.’ Inevitably, the popularity of his variety shows declined but Berle continued to perform his comedy routines and to appear as a guest star on various TV shows and in movies. In his early 90s, Milton Berle guest starred on an episode of Kenan & Kel: It would be his final professional appearance. Berle died in 2002 of colon cancer. His cremated remains were interred at Hillside Memorial Park in Culver City.
