Basketball at the 1996 Summer Olympics was dominated by the United States which took gold in both the men’s and women’s competition. The lion’s share of the preliminary rounds were played here on the campus of Morehouse College while the majority of the final rounds were played at the much larger Georgia Dome in downtown Atlanta.
Frank L. Forbes Arena, which was basically an addition to an existing gymnasium, was built specifically for the 1996 games and is the current home of the Morehouse College Maroon Tigers basketball team. It was named for Morehouse graduate Franklin Lafayette Forbes, longtime athletic director and coach at the school.
