"This copy of the Statue of Liberty (erected in New York and donated in 1886 to commemorate the centenary of American independence) was donated to the city of Poitiers by the Masonic lodge "Solidarity", whose headquarters are on rue du Trottoir, near Place de la Liberté (then Place du Pilori), and the Masonic lodge of Neuville, as evidenced by the inscription on the base.

Alexandre Lemoine paid as a contractor for the supporting stone structure, on which his name is engraved. It was inaugurated on July 14, 1903, after a municipal deliberation on December 1, 1902.

The torch, which had been modified, found a globe in April 2014.

It is a bronze copy of the Statue of Liberty by Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi, cast by the "Foundry / Val d'Osne / 56 / Sommevoire / Paris", as evidenced by the foundry mark. She brandishes the torch of Liberty with her right hand and holds in her left hand the Tables of the Law which bears the inscription "14 July / 1789 / 14 July / 1903".

Next to her bare sandal-shod feet lie the chains of slavery from which she freed herself. On the original, the inscription is the date of independence of the United States in Roman numerals ("JULY IV MDCCLXXVI"). Liberty is dressed in a long dress. Her bun hairstyle is covered with a tiara with seven points, symbols of the seven oceans (the one that had disappeared was returned in 2014)."

À côté de ses pieds nus chaussés de sandale gisent les fers de l'esclavage dont elle s'est libérée. Sur l'original, l'inscription est la date d'indépendance des États-Unis en chiffre romains (" JULY IV MDCCLXXVI "). La Liberté est vêtue d'une longue robe. Sa coiffure en chignon est recouverte d'un diadème comportant sept pointes, symboles des sept océans (celle qui avait disparu a été restituée en 2014). "
