From the Middle Ages until 1837, the City Crane of Utrecht stood here.
All that remains are a plaque and an image etched in stone on this location, a wikipedia page and old prints.

With the City Crane, ships were loaded and unloaded and were brought to street level through a tunnel with a walkway at this spot.
Today, supply ships still pass through the canal for supplies but the crane is attached to the ship and is hoisted from the ship to street level.

A replica of the old City Crane was placed at another location on the Oudegracht in May 2022. See: (visit link)
