The design of both the signs are based around a nautical theme with a ship's anchor being the central part with a female figure in the picture.
One of the signs shows a ship on a stormy sea and a large female figure is standing in the sea holding an anchor high in the air.
The second sign shows an anchor on a sea shore leaning against a rock. The female figure in a long white dress is looking towards the anchor and possibly out to sea.
The 'Hope and Anchor' is a common name for pubs and usually assumed to be related to nautical themes especially with signs such as these. However it is believed that the name originates from a biblical quotation from the Letter to the Hebrews (6: 19), “We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope”.
The pub itself has a large date stone in the middle of the wall.

REBUILT 1892
It is not clear from this whether the pub was also called the Hope and Anchor before it was rebuilt, but the sign implies it.
The pub itself is close to Pontefract Castle and All Saints Church, both of which were severely damaged during the English Civil War. It possible that the pub name does relate to the bible quotation and in particular reference to the events during the civil war.
