Malt is one of the ingredients of beer used in the brewing process.

In traditional, hand made brewing of beer, the various ingredients of beer needed to be stirred as they were mixed together and heated in large copper vessels.

The shovel used to do this was called a malt shovel and because of its association with brewing is often used as a pub name.
