The town of Monterey part of the Town of Tyringham until 1847 when it was incorporated as a separate town. The new residents of Monterey immediately planning to build church for their new town. Construction of the church began in 1847 and was completed in 1848.
The Greek Revival style Monterey Congregational church is a single story building with a gable roof and stone block foundation which was designed by Theron Wolcott and Elizur Perry. A long set of steps leads up to a central entrance which is flanked by Doric piasters. The ends of the church also have Doric piasters. Above the piasters is a pediment.
Rising from the gable roof is a bell tower with three-part louvered windows featuring a pair of Doric piasters. Square columns support a multi-tiered flat roof. The east side of the church has three 5 by 10 pane double hung windows and steps leading to a covered an auxiliary entrance at the NE end. The west side has four 5 by 10 pane double hung windows.
