Haig Point Lighthouse beamed it's first signal across Calibogue Sound on October 1st 1873 using a fifth-order Fresnel lens. This gave ships safe passage between Port Royal Harbor and the Savannah River. The lighthouse had three keepers until the Coast Guard decommissioned it in July 1924. After 1939 the lighthouse stood empty and abandoned nearly rotting away to nothing!

In 1984, International Paper Realty Corporation purchased Haig Point with plans to develop a low-key, resort community. Haig Point Lighthouse went through an extensive restoration and in 1986, Haig Point Lighthouse was re-lit in a festive ceremony that included a fireworks display and members of the Savannah Symphony playing Stars and Stripes Forever.

There have been 3 keepers: Patrick Comer (1873 – 1891), Richard Stonebridge (1891 – 1923), Charles L. Sisson (1923 – 1924).

As stated above in the quick description, you can book a stay in the lighthouse quarters. At the time this was written it was 500+ a night!

We took a dolphin cruise out of Hilton Head and while passing close to Daufuskie Island we asked the captain if he would drive us by the lighthouse to take some pictures which he gladly did!
