Paintings by prolific American realist Edward Hopper have appeared on several U.S. postage stamps over the years. In 1970, Hopper’s painting entitled ‘Lighthouse at Two Lights’ appeared on a stamp commemorating Maine’s 150th anniversary of statehood. Fifty years later, another of Hopper’s paintings, ‘Sea at Ogunquit,’ helped celebrate Maine’s 200th birthday on another stamp. Hopper’s iconic painting ‘Automat’ represented American Realism in the 1920s on a U.S. postage stamp celebrating the millennium.
In 2011, Edward Hopper was honored with his own postage stamp which featured his 1935 painting entitled ‘The Long Leg.’ It shows a sailboat beating against the wind near Provincetown, Massachusetts, with the Long Point Lighthouse in the background. The Long Point Lighthouse still exists but the keeper’s residence and other structures are long gone.
The mostly blue painting hangs in the Huntington American Art Gallery in San Marino, CA. The Huntington, as it is commonly called, is the former estate of railroad magnate Henry E. Huntington and consists of several art museums, a research library and Mr. Huntington’s grave all on 130 acres of meticulously landscaped gardens.
