Ballarat Railway Station is a stuccoed conservative Classical style complex comprising a platform shed built in 1862 and the entrance building dating from 1877-89. The platform shed features broken pedimented gables with Tuscan pilasters about the elliptical arched train entrance. Gabled pavilions at each end terminate the arcaded main facade. The central dome roofed clock tower is above and behind an Ionic portico.
Together with Geelong , Ballarat is the only surviving nineteenth century station building in Victoria now retaining a substantial and imposing train hall.
